The Department of English came into being with the inception of the college in 1969. Ever since its inception, the department has continuously been evolving and keeping itself abreast with the latest in the literary and the academic world. With a view to make a significant contribution to a larger societal appreciation of literature and culture and evincing positive feedback from the students, the department initiated the following programmes:

Students of B.A. English (Hons.) DAV College Bathinda, fetched laurels by excelling in University Examination.(23/4/24)

Eight Students of B.A English (Hons.), DAV College Bathinda excelled in University Examination of Sem III and Sem IV.
DAV College Bathinda holds distinction in offering B.A. English (Hons.) Course in the Malwa region. The history of excellence in results of B.A. English (Hons.) is repeated chronically.
Payal, Karamveer, Meganshi, Hardeep, Gurjinder, Manpreet and Ramanjot were honoured by the Principal of the College Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Head Department of English Dr. Satish Grover and all the faculty members of Department of English.He applauded the extra ordinary efforts of all the meritorious and scholary students of English Literature. Also he congratulated Dr. Satish Grover, Prof. Karampal Kaur, Dr. Neetu Purohit, Prof. Neha Sharma, Prof. Heena Bindal, Prof. Gurdeep Singh, Prof. Samanveer, Prof. Asha, Prof. Manpreet and Prof. Anita over their share of success.

DAV College outshines in the Literary Festival organised at Central University of Punjab, Bathinda.

The detective participants of the English Literary Society (Department of English), DAV College Bathinda showcased an exemplary performance in the Annual English Literary Festival, Mysterious World of Detective Fiction’ organised by Central University of Punjab, Bathinda. Harleen Kaur grabbed second prize in Cosplay and Gazal Naaz bagged third win in designing the Detective Book Cover Edition. Students portrayed varied detective characters, viz. Harleen dressed as Horatio Smith (Pimpernel Smith), Anmolpreet Singh as Osama Dazai (from Bungo Stray Dogs) and
Manish masquerading as L Lawliet (Death Note). Around 10 students participated in the various art forms and were accompanied by Dr. Neetu Purohit and Prof. Heena Bindal.
The Principal of the College, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma extolled the efforts of the Dr. Satish Grover, Head Department of English and the faculty members of the Department for their artistic endeavour. Also, he commended the efforts of all the Detectives in Disguise for their overwhelming performances.
 
 
 
Post Graduate Department of English of DAV College, Bathinda organises an Extension Lecture. (13 Oct ,2023)
DAV College, Bathinda organised an Extension Lecture on the topic, “What is Literature: Contemporary Trends, by Dr. Alpna Saini, Department of English, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CUPB).
Dr. Alpna Saini was felicitated by the Principal, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal, Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar and The Head of the Department, Dr. Satish Grover, Senior Faculty Member, Prof. Karampal Kaur, Dr. Neetu Purohit, Prof. Neha Sharma, Prof. Heena Bindal, Prof.Gurdeep Singh, Prof. Samanveer Kaur, Prof. Asha Goyal, Prof. Anita Jindal and Prof. Manpreet Kaur.
Dr. Satish Grover extended a cordial welcome to Dr. Alpna. The Principal, Dr. Rajeev Sharma addressed the students and eloquently stressed on the need to imbibe the teachings of Literature in the practical aspects of life. Dr. Alpna, the esteemed guest of the Day, made the show by imbibing the carvings of literature in the hearts and the minds of the literati. Effortlessly and Remarkable, she dealt with the idea of what is literature, what is not literature, Literature and Text, and Contemporary trends in Literature. She artistically involved the students in discussion and deliberation. Her open ended lecture provided students with the moments of introspection and interrogation.
The Principal of the College had a heart full of appreciation for all the faculty members of the Department of English, and he said such sort of informative lectures ought to be encouraged. Towards the end, Dr. Alpna was thanked and bidden formal adieu by Prof. Gurdeep Singh. The stage was managed by Prof. Heena Bindal. Staff Secretary, Prof. Kuldeep Singh and Prof. Vikas Katia graced the occasion with their presence.

DAV College Bathinda, screened ‘The Tempest’

The Film Club under the aegis of the Department of English, DAV College Bathinda conducts the screening of a movie based on the famed play, ‘The Tempest’ by Shakespeare, which is the part of their curriculum.

The Head of the Department, Dr. Satish Grover pleasantly greeted the literati and extended a warm welcome to the Principal of the College, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, who expressed his pleasure on the presence of numerous inquisitive students. He addressed the students and deliberated about the significance of learning literature using the audio video aids.

The Hall witnessed deafening silence at one time and peals of laughter at the other. Around 100 students of BA I,II,III, MA I and MA II watched the thematic film and reviewed it towards the end.

The Principal of the College, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma appreciated the efforts of Dr. Satish Grover, Prof. Karampal Kaur, Dr. Neetu Purohit, Prof. Heena Bindal, Prof. Gurdeep Singh, Dr. Samarveer Kaur, Prof. Asha Goyal, Prof. Anita Jindal and Prof. Manpreet Kaur for always taking innovative initiatives to instill the love of literature among students. Dr. Satish Grover thanked the students for their hushed and serene presence in the Hall and promised them to provide many such platforms to understand literature critically.

DAV College Bathinda Organizes ‘Induction Programme’ for the New Literati. (18 Sep., 2023)

Department of English, DAV College, Bathinda arranged for the induction, for the budding literati. The idea behind organising this event was to delineate the new students with the teaching fraternity of the department and the various societies and clubs under the aegis of the department of English.

The stage was managed by the senior students. The occasion began with bidding welcome to the Principal, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Staff Secretary Prof. Kuldeep Singh.

The Principal of the college addressed the students and informed them about the distinct activities organised for the students, and encouraged them for active participation.

Dr. Satish Grover, Head, Department of English conferred about the history of the college and the department. She detailed about the added feather of English Honours course and various other achievements of the department. Teachers of the department were introduced to the students. A brief quiz related to the details of the department was conducted, before concluding the event.

Prof. Karampal Kaur, presented the Thanks giving note and appreciated the efforts made by Dr. Neetu Purohit, Prof. Neha Sharma, Prof. Heena Bindal, Prof. Gurdeep Singh, Prof. Samanveer Kaur, Prof. Asha Goyal, Prof. Anita Rani and Prof. Manpreet Kaur. All the students participated zealously and refreshment was served at the end of the event.

 

M.A. English (Sem III) Students of DAV College Bathinda Fetch Laurels. (19 Aug., 2023)

The students of M.A. English (Sem III) of DAV College Bathinda attained remarkable scores in Punjabi University Patiala Examinations. Rozy stood first at 7.25 SGPA and Sakshi, Mehak Arora and Jaspreet Singh scored second position in the college at 7 SGPA.

The meritorious students of the college expressed gratitude to their parents and the faculty of the college for providing them right guidance and motivating them towards excellence.
The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma applauded the efforts of the Head, Department of English Dr. Satish Grover, Prof. Karampal Kaur, Dr. Neetu Purohit, Prof. Neha Sharma, Prof. Heena Bindal, Prof. Gurdeep Singh, Prof. Anita Rani, Dr. Samanveer Kaur, Prof. Manpreet Kaur and Prof. Asha for channelizing the energies of the students in the right direction and leading them towards success.

Dr. Satish Grover, Head Department of English, congratulated the students and showered blessings on them. She stated that it is a moment of great satisfaction for the Department of English to witness students performing well in the University examinations.

 

“Hasta La Vista” Organised by PG Department of English, DAV College Bathinda (10 May 2023)

The students of M.A. English of DAV College, Bathinda organized a Farewell Party “Hasta La Vista”for the M.A. II students of the Department of English. The programme commenced with the welcome of the Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar & Head Department of English Dr. Satish Grover, Prof. Karampal Kaur, Dr. Neetu Purohit, Prof. Neha Sharma, Prof. Gurdeep Singh, Prof. Anita Rani, Prof. Manpreet Kaur, Prof. Samanveeer Kaur and Prof. Asha by the students. The atmosphere resounded with enthusiasm, vivacity and gusto of the students. It glowed and came alive with the cultural bonanza presented by the students in the form of dances, songs, ramp walk, question answer session and many other fun filled games and programmes. As a token of love and remembrance, the students conferred titles on their teachers and seniors. “Miss Farewell” award went to Rozy Kocher and “Mr. Farewell” to Sukhman Singh.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma showered his blessings on the students and wished luck to them in their endeavours. He stated that this farewell is not an end but a new beginning for the students and their association with DAV will always last. 

The Head, Department of English, Dr. Satish Grover, in an overwhelming manner reminisced the journey of the students and the laurels they have brought to the institution. Wishing them success on embarking on a new journey in life, she said that they should not grudge about things, not be bowed down by difficulties and difficult people. 

The Vice-Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg and the faculty members of the Department of English also extended good wishes to the students and prayed for their well being and success.

DAV College Bathinda Commences Certificate Course in “Spoken English” (17 April 2023)

The Department of English, DAV College Bathinda has initiated a certificate course in “Spoken English” for the students of the college. The inquisitiveness of the enthusiastic students knew no bounds on the first day of the course and they raised many questions on the key components of the course including Grammar, Fluency, Vocabulary and Pronunciation.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kr. Sharma congratulated the students for showing keen interest in these classes. He said that in today’s global era, learning English language has become the need of the hour.  He also applauded the efforts of the Head, Department of English Dr. Satish Grover and the faculty members, namely, Prof. Karampal Kaur, Dr. Neetu Purohit, Prof. Neha Sharma, Prof. Gurdeep Singh, Prof. Anita Rani, Prof. Manpreet Kaur, Dr. Samanveer Kaur and Prof. Asha for earnestly working towards the commencement of this course.

The Head, Department of English, Dr. Satish Grover welcomed the students and stated that this certificate course would aid students in learning about the nuances of language and help gain them a mastery over English language. This would certainly boost confidence amongst the students and offer them lucrative opportunities in varied fields.

English Literary Society, DAV College Bathinda Organises Quiz Competition (31 March 2023)

The English Literary Society of DAV College Bathinda organized a Quiz Competition for the students of MA English and English Literature on March 31, 2023. Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Prof. Sandeep Bhatia and Staff Secretary Prof. Kuldeep Singh were accorded a warm welcome by the Head, Department of English Dr. Satish Grover, Dr. Neetu Purohit, Prof. Neha Sharma, Prof. Gurdeep Singh, Prof. Anita, Prof. Manpreet, Dr. Samanveer, and Prof. Asha.

The students participated enthusiastically in the competition and displayed a keen sense of interest in the various epochs and genres of English literature. The teams participating in the competition were Lamb’s Dreamers (BA I), Chaucer’s Tale Tellers (MA English), Shakespeare’s Sonneteers (BA II), and Wordsworth’s Lyricists (BA III). Round I consisted of questions from various works and genres of literature and Round 2 was based on the current events in the field of English Literature. Chaucer’s Tale Tellers and Shakespeare’s Sonneteers won the first prize. Wordsworth’s Lyricists team was at the second position and the third prize was won by Lamb’s Dreamers. Amongst the enthusiastic and interactive audience, prizes were won by Ashutosh (BA III), Mantaj Singh (BA II) and Khushi (BA I).

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma congratulated the students on participating in this quiz and displaying their mettle. He appreciated the students, the HoD and the faculty of the department for grooming the students well.

Trip to Book Fair (24.11.2022)

The Post Graduate Department of English in association with the Department of Library Science organized a one day tour to the “Book Fair” at Punjabi University Patiala. To inculcate a love for reading and enlighten the students about the rich repository of writers and publishers, the Readers’ Club members were taken to the book fair. The students expressed their exhilaration at being given this opportunity to visit the fair and witness the wide variety of books, ranging from literature, science, religion, culinary skills and many more.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma stated that Book Fairs are festivals which infuse the readers hearts with joy and empower them with knowledge, creativity and learning. This trip was thus organized to let the students familiarize themselves with a wide variety of books and the rich world of authors.  He appreciated the efforts of Dr. Satish Grover, Head, Department of English and Prof. Neha Sharma, Assistant Librarian for organizing this trip and accompanying the students. Dr. Neetu Purohit and Prof. Anita Rani also accompanied the students. The library staff members Mr. Anoop and Mr. Pritpal escorted the faculty members and the students.

“Vocabulary Enrichment and Language Proficiency”: Dr. Ashwani Rana (Department of English, CT University Ludhiana) (14.02.2020)

The Post- Graduate Department of English of DAV College Bathinda screened short movies, named “JOYCEE”, “Detour” and “Move On: Life of a Woman”.Short movies present to us the microcosm of the world we are living in and offer a complete narrative in a short space of time. Teaching the valuable lesson of optimism, the movies made the students cheerful and gave them a new perspective on life. (24.10.19)

“English Language in Indian Context”: Extension Lecture by Dr. Nakul Kundra (Department of English, DAV University Jalandhar) (31.10.2018)

  
  •   The PG Department of English organized a National Seminar on “Diasporic Indian English Literature: Issues and Concerns” on March 28, 2018. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Rajesh Sharma, Professor, Department of English, Punjabi University, Patiala. Dr. Shivani Thakar, Department of Distance Education, Punjabi University Patiala was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr. H.S. Arora read Dr. Bhim Singh Dahiya’s inaugural address in his absentia. Dr. Bhim Singh Dahiya is the former Vice Chancellor of Kurukshetra University. Due to his ill health, he could not attend the seminar. He presented an overview of Diasporic Literature.
