Vision

To provide a strong foundation in the concepts of animal structure, classification, function and behavior and to inculcate practical skills and knowledge of biology of animals.

About the Department:

The Department has well equipped laboratories with Autoclave, Compound Microscopes, Microtome, Oven and Dissecting Microscope etc.

The Department has a collection of various preserved animals (Vertebrates & Invertebrates) and preserved plants like  Algae, Bryophytes, Fungi, Lichens, Gymnosperms, Pteridophytes, Ferns & Angiosperms.

The department also has the Botanical Garden spread over ample space. Special attractions in the garden are varieties of Ashavagandha, Tulsi, Neem, Haldi, Amla, Curry Patta, Rose, Guava, Arjuna, Giloe, Kikar etc. The Botanical Garden served as the repository of source material for Botanical studies, is also geared to cater to the dire need of conserving & enriching plant bio-diversity through exchange of plant & seeds.

DAV College Bathinda organises an Extension Lecture on “Water Crisis and its Conservation in Punjab”.

Eco Club under the aegis of the Department of Botany and Department of Zoology of DAV College Bathinda organises an Extension Lecture on “Water Crisis and its Conservation in Punjab”. Dr. Onkar Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University Patiala was the Resource Person for the lecture. The event was supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India and Punjab State Council for Science and Technology acted as State Nodal Agency.
The distinguished speakers delineated about the distribution of global water resources, national scenario of water resources and categorization of blocks/mandals/talukas. He also informed the listeners about the status of available water resources in Punjab and depletion of under ground water level year after year due to human intervention. The causes of water depletion and problems due to depletion of water levels were highlighted. He also discussed about the consequences of water depletion and remedies for water conservation. The issues of water logging, salinity and pollution of water resources were also discussed thoroughly.

Valedictory Session of Three Days Workshop on Vermicomposting, Dry Leaves Composting and Liquid Fertilizers conducted at DAV College Bathinda.

The Concluding Day of the Three Days ‘Workshop on Vermicomposting, Dry Leaves Composting and Liquid Fertilizers’ supported by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change at DAV College Bathinda remained intellectually rewarding. Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) acted as State Nodal Agency. The Chief Guest of the day was Sh. Rahul, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Bathinda.
Day III commenced with an Expert talk on Dry Leaves Composting by Dr. Sukhwinder Singh, Soil Scientist, Punjab Agriculture University, Regional Research Station, Bathinda. He delineated on the productive conversion of Dry Plants material into valuable Compost, required techniques and procedures. Sh. Rahul advised the participate to start composting at small scale level and use kitchen waste constructively.
The second half of the day began with a demonstration on Dry Leaves composting where Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Coordinator Workshop detailed the procedure of turning green waste into gold for plants. 138 students from Various Schools and Colleges, Mrs. Inderjit Kaur and Mrs. Varnita Puri from Municipal Corporation and NSS Volunteers of DAV College Bathinda attended the presentation and inquisitively raised their queries.

Day II set about with an Expert talk by Dr. Yogalakhsmi KN, Head, Department of Environmental Science and Technology and Dean of School of Environment and Earth Sciences, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda on Solid Waste Management. She elaborated on the Solid Waste, Classification of Solid Waste, Waste Generation, Consequences of Improper Disposal, Efficient Disposal of Solid Waste.
The Day concluded with the demonstration on Liquid Fertilizers from Kitchen Waste where Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Coordinator Workshop detailed the procedure of managing and extracting the essential nutrients from the Kitchen Waste wisely and supplying it to the Plants. 120 students from Various Schools and DAV College, Staff from Municipal Corporation and NSS Volunteers of DAV College Bathinda attended the presentation and inquisitively raised their queries.

Three Days Workshop on Vermicomposting, Dry Leaves Composting and Liquid Fertilizers begin at DAV College Bathinda.

 

Under Environment Education Programme, a Three Days ‘Workshop on Vermicomposting, Dry Leaves Composting and Liquid Fertilizers’ supported by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change begins at DAV College Bathinda. The Nodal Agency for the workshop is Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh.
The Workshop began with the demonstration on Vermicomposting where Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Coordinator Workshop displayed the procedure of Vermicomposting and instructed the participants regarding the productive use of waste. Around 100 students and teachers from various Schools, Staff from Municipal Corporation and NSS Volunteers of DAV College Bathinda attended the presentation and inquisitively raised their queries.
The Demonstration was followed by an Expert talk by Dr. Wineet Chawla from MRSPTU, Bathinda on Vermicomposting, Turning Waste into Gold. He elaborated on Vermiculture and Vermitechnology, Economics and Schemes of Vermiculture.

DAV College Bathinda organised Nature Camp under Environment Education Programme.

Eco club of DAV College, Bathinda organised Nature Camp under Environment Education Programme from Nov 18, 2023 to Nov 20, 2023 at Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Life Sanctuary, Hoshiarpur. Punjab state Council for Science and Technology acted as Nodal agency and the Ministry of Environment and Forest Climate Change sponsored the camp. The Coordinators of the Camp, Dr. Ranjeet Singh and Dr. Amandeep Kaur accompanied by Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Prof. Nirmal Singh, Dr. Neetu Purohit and Prof. Ramil Gupta arranged for the camp for a total of 50 students.
Day I began with a Lecture on Flora and Fauna at Takhni Rehmapur Wildlife Sanctuary by Dr. Amandeep Singh, Nature Conservationist and Life Coach. He detailed the young minds about the significance of flora and fauna, destruction of their natural habitats by humans and the strategies to conserve biodiversity. The lecture was followed by Nature Walk and Bird Watching under the guidance of Dr. Amandeep Singh who time to time explained about the identification of chirping birds and footprints of distinct animals. Next was the visit to Watch Tower, which let the campers study the canopy view of the forests.
Day II of the camp commenced with a lecture on Importance of Biodiversity by Prof. Punit Puri, Head, Post Graduate Department of Zoology, DAV College, Jalandhar. He detailed the scope and types of Biodiversity and threats to it. Dr. Ranjeet Singh, Coordinator of the Camp, discussed the therapeutic values of plants. Under the guidance of Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Coordinator of the Camp, students collected and examined the pond water to study microbial diversity. Nature Photography was another event of the day. Field experiments under the guidance of Dr. Ranjeet Singh were performed in the lap of nature. Thereafter Poster Making Competition was organised. Varinda got the first, Rajwant Kaur was awarded the second and Lovepreet Kaur and Himkshi were awarded the third prize. In the Nature Photography Gurleen Kaur, Sarthak Bansal and Dushyant Jindal were declared first, second and third respectively. Earthen Toy Crafting competition was also organised in which Anjali was declared the winner. Arshdeep Singh grabbed the second and Nikita received the third prize. Grafting techniques were explained by Dr. Ranjeet Singh. Dr. Neetu Purohit headed the Talent show in which cultural activities were organised by the students.
Day III included an expert talk on Cleanliness of Environment by Prof. Nirmal Singh. Prof. Ramil Gupta managed the Prize Distribution session. Prof. Kuldeep Singh shared the Concluding Remarks at the end of the Camping day.
The Principal of the College, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma welcomed back the campers and applauded the efforts of Dr. Ranjeet Singh and Dr. Amandeep Kaur for managing the Camp efficiently. He also congratulated the participants on successful completion of the camp and receiving the certificates for the same.

Department of Zoology, DAV College Bathinda arranged for Lifeline Charitable Laboratory Visit

Department of Zoology of DAV College Bathinda planned a Visit to Lifeline Charitable Laboratory for the Students of B.Sc Medical. Monu Khusrsija, Owner, Lifeline Charitable Lab welcomed Prof. Amar Santosh, Head, Department of Zoology and all the inquisitive students.
Lab technicians Arshdeep and Rinku assisted the students and detailed about Blood Group and Biochemical, Complete Blood Count, Lipid Profile Tests, Blood Sugar Level, Creatinine, Sodium Potassium Level, Plasma Protein and Albumin tests. The students were also given exposure of collecting Blood Samples. They were made aware about the importance and techniques of proper disposal of Needles, Syringes, and Bio Waste.

DAV College Bathinda Organized Mutual-Induction Program of B.Sc. Students through Experiments and Demonstrations in Sciences. (16 Sep., 2023)

Departments of Physics, Botany, and Zoology of DAV College, Bathinda ignited the flames of scientific curiosity through an enthralling competition on Experiments & Demonstrations in Sciences. This event, held under the auspices of the DBT Star College Scheme, unfolded on the 16th of September, 2023, commencing at 10:00 AM, at the state-of-the-art Innovation-Hub located within the hallowed halls of the Physics Department.

Dr. Gurpreet Singh, the Head of Department for Physics spearheading the activity, welcomed a vibrant cohort of 62 budding scholars pursuing B.Sc. across Medical and Non-Medical disciplines. The competition served as an induction program for the fresh faces of B.Sc., seamlessly blending theory with hands-on practice.

The event witnessed participants from B.Sc.-II and IIIrd Years expertly crafting insightful presentations using PPTs, enlightening the newcomers with a vivid array of demonstrations, each anchored in fundamental scientific principles. Dr. Amar Santosh, the Head of Zoology Department, delivered a captivating exposition on the workings of the Digital Microscope.

Dr. Kulwinder Singh Mann, co-ordinator, DBT Star College Scheme deftly guided the proceedings, overseeing a diverse array of demonstrations encompassing topics as diverse as Conservation of Angular Momentum, Equilibrium, Plasma, Tesla Coil, Black Hole, Faraday Electromagnetic Shielding, Racing Track, Working Principle of Generator, Automatic Energy Saver, Total Internal Reflection Vortex Formation, Digital Microscope, and Detection of Blood Pressure.

During the tea break, students engaged in a fruitful exchange with Dr. Vikas Duggal regarding his recent research endeavor, conducted in tandem with B.Sc. scholars under the DBT-Star College Scheme. Dr. Kulwinder Singh Mann, the DBT Coordinator, illuminated the scheme’s overarching objectives.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma extended his congratulations to the departments for orchestrating this enlightening interdepartmental activity. He also unveiled plans for an upcoming mega science fair scheduled for the first week of October, 2023.

The eminent panel of judges, Dr. Kulwinder Singh Mann and Dr. Amar Santosh, meticulously assessed the teams, weighing their grasp of the demonstration’s underlying concepts and the level of participant involvement. In recognition of their efforts, certificates and accolades were conferred upon the victors.

Team No. 2 (Sarthik, Ramendra, Jasleen, Muskan) secured the coveted First Prize, with Team No. 8 (Aanjali Kumari, Maha Singh) clinching Second Prize, and Team No. 1 (Garima, Nikita, Sarita) securing the Third Prize. Teams No. 3 and 4 (Tanisha, Arshdeep Singh, Amandeep Kaur, Navnish Kaur, Nishtha) were lauded with Consolation Prizes.

In a concluding gesture, Dr. Kulwinder Singh Mann extended a vote of thanks, applauding the students for their indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to the spirit of scientific inquiry.

 

DAV COLLEGE BATHINDA CELEBRATES THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY (IDB)-2023 (27 May 2023)

The Departments of Botany, DAV College Bathinda celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB)-2023 on the theme “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity” on May 27, 2023. The event was organized in collaboration with Punjab Biodiversity Board (PBB) and sponsored by National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), Govt. of India. On this occasion, various events like extension lecture, tree plantation, photography competition and poster presentation were organized. The resource person Dr. Daizy Rani Batish, Professor Department of Botany, Punjab University Chandigarh was extended a warm welcome by the Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar Dr. Satish Grover, Staff Secretary Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Event Coordinator Dr. Ranjeet Singh, Head, Department of Zoology Dr. Amar Santosh, Head Department of Botany Dr. Kriti Gupta and Dr. Amandeep Kaur.

Dr. Daizy Rani Batish elucidated on scope of biodiversity, its principles and conservation practices of biodiversity. She stated that biological diversity is often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants, animals and microorganisms, but it also includes genetic differences within each species — for example, between varieties of crops and breeds of livestock — and the variety of ecosystems (lakes, forest, deserts, agricultural landscapes) that host multiple kind of interactions among their members (humans, plants, animals). She further stated that if we keep our biodiversity intact, it will help in maintaining the ecological balance.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma thanked the resource person Dr. Daizy Rani Batish for making the youth aware of that how biological diversity is a global asset of tremendous value to future generations. He appreciated the event coordinator Dr. Ranjeet Singh for organizing this event.

DAV College Bathinda Organises Lecture on “Anthropocene; A Misplaced Trust in Ecological Utopia”

The Department of Zoology in collaboration with the Eco Club organized an extension lecture on “Anthropocene; A Misplaced Trust in Ecological Utopia” for B.Sc. students on April 25, 2023. The resource person on the occasion was Professor (Dr.) Himender Bharti (Director, Centre for Restoration of Ecosystem of Punjab & Former Head, Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University Patiala). The program was supported and funded by Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) and Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) under the Environment Education Program. Dr. Himender Bharti and Dr. Meenakshi Bharti were accorded a warm welcome by the Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg Registrar Dr. Satish Grover, Staff Secretary Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Head, Department of Zoology Dr. Amar Santosh, Head Department of Botany Dr. Kriti Gupta, Dr. Amandeep Kaur and Dr. Ranjeet Singh.

DAV College Bathinda Organises Molecular Lab Visit for B.Sc. Students (17 Oct 2022)

The Department of Zoology of DAV College Bathinda organized a molecular Lab Visit to Central University of Punjab, Bathinda for B.Sc. Medical (III Year) students.

Integrating curriculum with the practical knowledge, the students were taken to the Central Instrumentation Lab and were demonstrated the functioning of the various lab instruments like PCR, DNA Sequencer, Flow Cytometer, Bioanalyzer, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer (NMR,600MHz), Powder X-Ray Diffractometer(XRD),Inductively coupled Plasma Mass spectrometer, Gas Chromatography, etc. Dr. Rabindra Kumar and Dr. Sumeer Razdan imparted valuable information on the working of different instruments used in the laboratory.

The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma appreciated the Dr. Amar Santosh (Head, Department of Zoology) and Dr. Kriti Gupta (Head, Department of Botany) for organizing this lab visit. He said that such lab visits impart hands on knowledge to the students and enhance their knowledge trajectories.

Field Trip to Bir Talab

The Department of Botany of DAV College Bathinda organized a field trip to Bir Talab Zoo, Bathinda for the students of B.Sc.III (Medical) as a part of the curriculum.

Lecture on Biodiversity: Status & Conservation in India

The Departments of Botany and Zoology, DAV College Bathinda on the occasion of “International Biodiversity Day” organized a lecture on the topic, “Biodiversity: Status & Conservation in India”. The resource person on the occasion was Dr. Avneet Pal Singh (Department of Botany, Punjabi University Patiala).

National Conference on “Recent Advances in Science & Technologyfor Sustainable Development”

The Departments of Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Botany and Zoology) of DAV College Bathinda organized a SERB-DST & DBT Sponsored Multi-Disciplinary National Conference on “Recent Advances in Science & Technology for Sustainable Development” on 05th March, 2022.

 

National Science Day

The Departments of Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Botany and Zoology) of DAV College Bathinda celebrated National Science Day on 2/03/2022 on the theme “Integrated Approach in Science & Technology for Sustainable Future”. Financial Assistance for the event was provided by Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST), National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCTSC) and Department of Science & Technology (DST) Govt. of India. On this occasion various events like lecture, slide show, Quiz Competition and Poster competition were organised.

Environmental Rangoli Competition

With an aim of bringing forth the creativity and making students environmentally aware, the Faculty of Sciences, DAV College Bathinda under the banner of DBT Star College Scheme organized an interdepartmental activity “Environmental Rangoli Making Competition” on November 25, 2021. The adjudicators for the event were Prof. Rajnish Kumar (Retd. Prof., Department of Botany, DAV College, Bathinda), Prof. I. K. Sukhija (Retd. Prof., Department of Zoology, DAV College, Bathinda) and Dr. Harjinder Singh Mann, Registrar and Associate Professor of Physics Department, Govt. Rajindra College, Bathinda). The competition witnessed an enthusiastic participation of 118 students from various schools and colleges of Bathinda city and nearby villages.

Clinical Lab Visit for B.Sc. Students

The Department of Zoology of DAV College Bathinda organized a clinical Lab Visit for B.Sc. Medical (III Year) students on November 23, 2022 under the guidance of Dr. Amandeep Kaur.

Knowledge Quest -2021

Under the DBT STAR College Scheme, Departments of Physics, Botany, and Zoology of DAV College Bathinda organized a quiz competition “Knowledge Quest” for science students on 10th March, 2021. The focus of this competition was on creating more awareness of science and technology and inculcating scientific temperament amongst the students.

One day workshop on “Bioinformatics: An Ocean of Opportunities to Leverage During Lockdown”

The Departments of Botany and Physics of DAV College Bathinda, organized a one day webinar on “Bioinformatics: An Ocean of Opportunities to Leverage During Lockdown” under DBT sponsored Star College Scheme. Dr. Felix Bast (Associate Professor, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda) was the resource person on the occasion.

Clinical Lab Visit

The students of B.Sc. (Medical) II & III of DAV College, Bathinda were taken on a clinical lab visit to GEE ESS Laboratory Bathinda on March 09, 2020. Dr. Saran Pal imparted valuable information on the working of different instruments used in the laboratory and Mr. Paramjit demonstrated different types of blood and urine tests performed in the laboratory.

National Conference on “Emerging Scenario in Basic and Applied Sciences for Sustainable Development” was held on 5th April,2018. Dr. R.K. Kohli , vice-chancellor, Central University of Punjab,Bathinda was Keynote Speaker on the Occasion. Dr. Rohit Mehra , Professor, Department of Physics, National Institute of Technology(NIT), Jalandhar was Resource Person in the Conference.

 

 

    

 

 

Educational Tour/Trip :

  1. Clinical lab visit for B.Sc. students was organized at GEE ESS lab at Bathinda on 20th April, 2019
  2. To integrate the curriculum with practical knowledge, students were taken to Dr. Monika’s Lab on 10th  Mar., 2018
  3. Clinical lab visit for B.Sc. students was organized at Tayal’s lab at Bathinda on 7th July, 2017
  4. Students were taken for a four day educational tour to Haldi Ghati and Udaipur on 17th Mar., 2017
  5. One day educational trip was organized to Bir, near Faridkot for B.Sc. students on 13th Mar., 2016.

Farewell Party:

  1. For outgoing students, a Farewell Party was organized on 3rd April, 2018  at D.A.V. College where students presented various cultural items.
