Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1969, offering B.Sc (Medical/Non-Medical), 10+1 and 10+2 (Medical/Non Medical). The department feels proud in producing Doctors and Engineers of National & International repute from Bathinda and adjoining areas. The department has achieved new milestone by starting post-graduation course in Chemistry from the year 2017.

DEPARTMENTAL LABORATORIES: The department is flourished with two undergraduate and two post graduate laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

INSTRUMENTAL FACILITIES: The department has excellent instrumental facilities such as FT-IR, UV-Visible spectrophotometer, Rotary Evaporator, pH meter , Conductivity meter Muffle Furnace, UV Chamber Cabinet, Colorimeter, Potentiometer, Polarimeter with sodium lamp, Abbe’s Refractometer, Centrifugal Machine, Water Double Distillation Unit with cut off , Sonicator, Electronic Balance etc.

DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY: Apart from central library of the college, department has its own library with an excellent collection of invaluable books by Indian and foreign authors. The books are issued regularly to the students as per their requirement. The library has a unique book bank from which the books are issued to the needy and academically deserving students.

ACME CHEMICAL SOCIETY:  ACS steered by the department is constituted for the all round development of the students. The objective of the society is to nurture managerial skills in students which will extend their outlook and capacity beyond the traditions of academia.

DAV Students of B.Sc. (Medical) Excelled in University Examinations. (1/9/2024)

The students of DAV College Bathinda B.Sc. (Medical) attained exemplary results in the Punjabi University Patiala Examinations. Students performed brilliantly and fetched glory for the college. Varinda Bansal attained First Position by scoring 89.27%, Lovisha scored 87.63% and bagged Second position and Rajwant Kaur got 86% and achieved Third Position.
The Principal of the College Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma congratulated the students and appreciated them for their consistent efforts. He stated that the combined efforts of the students, teachers and the administration lead the institution to glory. He appreciated faculty members from the Department of Botany, Department of Chemistry and Department of Zoology for mentoring and educating the students for the outstanding performance.

Transformative INSPIRE Science Camp Concludes at DAV College Bathinda.

The explorative journey of science and human curiosity reached its satisfying fruition on the concluding Day 5 of the residential INSPIRE Science Camp, scheduled from August 27- 31, 2024, under the aegis of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. The distinguished guests who graced the occasion with their benign presence were Dr. Himendra Bharti (Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala) Dr. Daizy Batish (Professor, Department of Botany, PanjabUniversity, Chandigarh), Dr. G.S. Sodhi (Associate Professor Forensic Science Unit, SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi) and Dr. S.K.Mehta (Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh).
The auspicious lamp lighting ceremony and DAV Gaan commenced the enriching Day 5 of INSPIRE camp. The distinguished academicians were extended a heartfelt welcome by the Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar Dr. Satish Grover, Staff Secretary Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Programme Coordinator Dr. Neha Jindal, Head Department of Chemistry Prof. Meetu S. The first enlightening lecture of the day was delivered by Dr. Himendra Bharti (Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala) on “Evolutionary Biology and its Significance”. Dr Bharti at the outset traced the human evolution from chimpanzees and Neanderthals to present day Homo sapiens. He elucidated on the recent studies which indicate significant role of microbes in preventing cancers and how good Gut microbes play a vital role in building immunity against various communicable as well as life style diseases like diabetes, hypertension and depression. Deftly answering students’ queries, he talked about various inter generational mutations and hereditary transmission of diseases and physical traits.
Dr. Daizy Batish (Department of Botany, Panjab University, Chandigarh) spoke on the topic” Importance of Ecological Knowledge in Addressing Environmental Issues”. She enunciated about Ecology, Environment, Habitat and Niche. Informing students about the dependence of organisms on food and shelter, she elaborated on the food chains and food webs. Furthering her discussion on Biodiversity, she explained about its types, causes and conservative strategies. At the conclusion of her lecture, she exhorted the students to value and conserve the pristine beauty of Nature.
Dr. G.S. Sodhi (Associate Professor Forensic Science Unit, SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi) in his lecture on “Relevance of Crime Scene Management” expounded upon how Forensic Scientists form an indispensable part in unravelling the truth behind the crime scene and how they come to the aid of courts and police. He explained about the various processes of forensic sciences, like, detection of forgeries, crime scene Narco analysis and how fingerprints are an infallible means of identification .
The insightful lectures were followed by the Valedictory session. Delivering his valedictory note on “Nanotechnology and Cosmetology “, Dr. S.K. Mehta (Vice Chancellor, University of Ladakh) talked about the crucial played by nanotechnology, nanoparticles during COVID times and in cosmetology. He explained the role of nanoparticles as a protective sheath from COVID virus on cell membranes and how nanoparticles are used in daily cosmetic products. He also spoke about the different forms of nanoparticles such as Nanoliposomes ,Nanoemulsions, Nanoinosomes, Niosomes and Nanoemulsions.
The engaging and informative lectures were followed by the prize distribution ceremony for various activities during the five days INSPIRE Science Camp. G.T.B. Khalsa Public School nailed the quiz competition with the brainy buddy group of Annis Loona, Anureet Kaur and Mannat. The shining gems of Meritorious School Bathinda, Jaskirat Singh, Gurveer Kaur and Sandeep Kumar Prajapati bagged the second prize. The brilliant brains of Meritorious School Bathinda Amandeep Kaur, Manpreet Kaur and Renu Kumari grabbed the Consolation Prize.
The results for the informative and creative Poster Making/Cartooning competition were shared in which Aishpreet Kaur and Avnoor Kaur of GTB Khalsa Public School , Malout gained first position, Jashandeep Singh and Satveer Singh of Jiwan Mall Govt.Model Senior Secondary School ( Boys ) bagged the second prize and Muskan and Gurleen Geary of Meritorious School Bathinda achieved the third position.
The students of Sciences proved their mettle in the world of words too. In the Scientific Writing Competition, Gurveer Kaur of Meritorious School Bathinda was awarded First Position , Annis Loona of GTB School , Malout was awarded Second and Beant Kaur of Meritorious School Sangrur received the Third position. Avnoor Kaur, Jashandeep Singh, Jasmeen Jassi, Jashandeep Singh, Aishpreet Kaur, Devika , Ritika Chaudhary and Rachhpreet Kaur received the consolation prizes.
The students attending the INSPIRE Science Camp were awarded with the certificate.
The stage for the event was conducted meticulosusly by Dr. Neetu Purohit, Prof. Ramil Gupta and Prof. Harpreet Kaur Brar.
The valedictory note was presented by the Programme Coordinator Dr. Neha Jindal. She briefed the gathering about the informative lectures delivered by eminent scientists. Information was also imparted about the various hands on training sessions on all five days of the camp, screening of documentary, quiz competition, poster making, recreational cultural evening and many such events. Her Vote of Thanks extended gratitude to all the resource persons, participative audience, management and all her team members in making the event a success.
The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma expressed immense gratitude to the esteemed dignitaries for enhancing the knowledge trajectories of the young science enthusiasts. Addressing the young aspiring students, he in an overwhelming tone stated that this is not the end of the scientific explorative journey but an initiation into the transformative informed world of educational and career opportunities for the students, as enabled by this INSPIRE Science Camp.
He greatly applauded the earnest efforts of the Programme Coordinator Dr. Neha Jindal and all the members of various committees for the resounding success of the INSPIRE Science Camp.

Engaging Lectures and Scientific Demonstrations on Day 4 of INSPIRE Science Camp.

In order to build the capacities of the spirit of enquiry and creativity among the young budding scientists, DAV College Bathinda hosted the day 4 of the 5 days residential INSPIRE Science Camp, scheduled from August 27- 31, 2024, under the aegis of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. The distinguished guests who graced the occasion with their benign presence were Dr. Rup Lal (Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Delhi & INSA Senior Scientist), Dr. R.K. Kohli (Vice Chancellor Amity University, Mohali) and Dr. Neetu Verma (Head & Associate Professor, PG Department of Physics, Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar). The occasion was also graced by the benign presence of Dr. K. K. Nohria (Senior Member, Local Managing Committee) and Dr. Anuradha Bhatia (Principal DAV School, Bathinda).

The first lecture of the day by Dr. Rup Lal (Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Delhi & INSA Senior Scientist) set the tone of the day wherein he discussed about the important role that microbiomes in our body play. He discussed at length how human brain and gut microbiomes are interlinked with each other. He advised the students to learn about its importance and understand that in order to be healthy we should integrate microbiology in our daily lives. He in a very entertaining way also demonstrated how our country has progressed through ages and the youth of today should make the best use of the amenities available to them.
Dr. R.K. Kohi (V.C, Amity University, Mohali) in his inspirational and informative session stimulated the students to identify their fundamental strengths and intrests and be cautious in opting the discipline for higher studies. Students were informed about the Various Financial Support Systems for Science Education at each tier of education. In his noteworthy session he discussed with students the various experiments he has conducted and how are they relevant for the environment surrounding us.
Students unravelled the experimental world of Physics through the interesting and engaging scientific demonstrations by Dr. Neetu Verma (Head & Associate Professor, PG Department of Physics, Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar).
The students after being enlightened on various career options and developing a scientific acumen, attended the Hands on Training Sessions. The grey cells of the aspiring scientists were activated during the Quiz competition at the conclusion of the program.
The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the distinguished scientists for gracing the camp with their presence. Appreciating the attentive and participative young audience, he stated that the INSPIRE Science Camp is an aim towards making them aware that science is a process of investigating, posing questions and coming up with a solution. Carrying forward the amazing voyage of scientific exploration , DAV College Bathinda hosted the day 3 of the 5 days residential INSPIRE Science Camp, scheduled from August 27- 31, 2024, under the aegis of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. The distinguished guests who graced the occasion with their benign presence were Dr. K.K Bhasin, Emeritus Professor, Punjab University, Chandigarh; Dr. Mohan D Sharma, Professor Retd., Department of Mathematics, Kurukshetra University; and Dr. G S Randhawa, Biotechnologist and Former Professor IIT Roorkee.

Dr. K.K Bhasin (Emeritus Professor, Punjab University, Chandigarh) delivered a lecture on “Fascinating Aspects in Chemical Sciences”. He started his lecture by imparting a very pertinent advice to the students to always respect their teachers. Before delving deep into the world of Chemistry, he taught the young gathering that in order to appreciate and understand a subject, 5 things should be adhered to, that is to be present mentally, physically, intellectually, ethically and regularly. Very interestingly he told the students how to decipher Chemistry in everyday life. He discussed the minutest details of Allotropic & different forms of carbon, periodic table, Redox reaction, chemical structure of cotton, Nobel Prize winners, and about Peter Ludwig Pauson, the German Scientist.
The second lecture of the day by Dr. Mohan D Sharma (Professor Retd., Department of Mathematics, Kurukshetra University) on “Knowledge (without experiment) via Mathematics” elicited enthusiastic response from the students. Dr. Sharma elucidated how Mathematics increases the stock of knowledge with equipment and laboratory. He asserted that Engineering and Science are incomplete without Mathematics as it enables the other fields of study to explore the truth logically. He also discussed about the different branches of Mathematics and their role in daily life by elucidating through varied examples, like, knowledge of Maxima/ Minima, how to know the volume of blood in the body of a person, using mathematical models in our domestic chores or in bee hives, sequence of measurements, limit point, calculus, heron’s formula, importance of dozen and a number of such interesting examples.
The third lecture of the day by Dr. G S Randhawa, (Biotechnologist and Former Professor IIT Roorkee) on “Hierarchal Diversity From DNA to Genes” captivated the attention of the science enthusiasts by finding science in everyday life like kneading dough or making a chapati. He described how molecular genetics determine our body movements and human genome sequencing in detail. Listening to this multifaceted personality enthused amongst the students a new spark motivating them to pursue a healthy and moral life which will help them face all hurdles on their way.
The insightful lectures were followed by hands on training sessions. Ms. Maninder Kaur (Principal, Dr. Hari Singh Sewak School of Eminence, Kotkapura) unraveled the mysterious world of science by demonstrating magical science tricks and helping them explore science beyond mythology. Students also exhibited an excellent prowess of their writing skills in the scientific and technical write up session.
The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma thanked the esteemed scholars for sparing their valuable time and enhancing students’ knowledge domains not only in the realm of science but also about how to lead their lives with a purpose and direction.

Day 2 of Inspire Science Camp at DAV College, Bathinda Gains Momentum.(28/8/2024)

To cater to the scientific temper of the young aspiring scientists, DAV College Bathinda hosted the 2nd day of the 5 days residential INSPIRE Science Camp, scheduled from August 27- 31, 2024, under the aegis of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. The distinguished guests who graced the occasion with their benign presence were Prof. Arun Kumar Grover, (Honorary Professor, Department of Physics, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh and former Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh), Dr. B.S. Kaith, (Head of ITEP, NIT Jalandhar), Dr. C.M. Batra, (Professor, Mathematics and Associate Dean at KIET Group of Institutions, Delhi-NCR, Ghaziabad )and Dr. Jaswinder Singh (Principal Govt. Senior Secondary School, Maherna Kalan) .
The lamp lighting ceremony and DAV Gaan marked the beginning of the eventful Day 2 of the INSPIRE Science Camp. The eminent guests were extended a hearty welcome by the Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar Dr. Satish Grover, Programme Coordinator Dr. NehaJindal, Head Department of Chemistry Prof. Meetu S. First Session of the Day was conducted by Prof.(Dr.) Arun Kumar Grover (Honorary Professor, Department of Physics, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh). Passionately elucidating on Homi Bhabha’s life, he in his lecture ” Homi Bhabha : An Inspiring Physicist who envisioned many initiatives for Viksit Bharat” discussed about the life journey of Homi Bhabha, his research at Cambridge and briefly discussed the key points of the books written by him. He also elaborated about the initiatives undertaken by the government for the promotion of Science and Technology, in order to strive towards Viksit Bharat. Dr. Grover in his lecture enlightened the students about Bhabha’s long term strategy for Nuclear Power in India and the Compton Effect in Physics.
Dr. B. S. Kaith ( Head of ITEP, NIT Jalandhar) in the second lecture of the day directed the students into the delicious world of food and its judicious consumption in his lecture “Healthy Life Style and Food”. He talked in detail about vitamins, proteins, fats and how a proper intake of each of these vitamins is vital for a healthy lifestyle. He also advised students to take a high fibre diet, eat salads, drink water and refrain from regular consumption of junk food. Diseases like colon cancer and osteoporosis, he stated, can be prevented by eating the right food in a right manner and at right time.
After an enlightening session by an informed Physicist, the third session was conducted by Dr. C. M. Batra , a renowned Mathematician from KIET Group of Institutions on the topic ” Applications of Mathematics”. He enlightened the students about the different fields of Mathematics and expressed about the role of Mathematics in different branches of Engineering; Computer Science Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. He explained about the role of Vector Calcus in Robotics, Gaming and Architecture. Also he dwelt upon the application of Statistics in Machine Learning and the role of Statistics in Daily Life.
The engaging lectures were followed by Hands on Training sessions in laboratories. In the Poster making/ Cartooning session, students unleashed their creativity and projected interesting concepts of Science. The students were then taken en tour to the interesting application of science in everyday life by Dr. Jaswinder Singh (Principal Govt. Senior Secondary School, Maherna Kalan) .
Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma thanked the esteemed guests and resource persons for enhancing the knowledge trajectories of the young scientists with their knowledge and wisdom. He expressed satisfaction over the successful completion of two days of INSPIRE Science Camp, aimed at clarifying many doubts and apprehensions regarding the various branches of science and gaining a fresh insight into the scientific domains closely related to our physical world.

INSPIRE Science Camp Commences at DAV College Bathinda. (27/8/20224)

In a bid to unlock the scientific potential of the students, DAV College Bathinda convened the first day of the prestigious and transformative 5 days residential INSPIRE Science Camp, scheduled from August 27- 31, 2024, under the aegis of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. The distinguished guests at the inaugural session were Dr. Arvind (Professor, IISER, Mohali and Former Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala), Dr. P.K.Pati (Head, Department of Agriculture, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar) and Dr. Atul Khanna (Head, Department of Physics, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Punjab).
The programmed commenced with the sacred chanting of the gayatri mantra and the lamp lighting ceremony. Having earned a distinction for themselves in the scientific and the academic world, the eminent guests, were felicitated and accorded a warm welcome by the Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar Dr. Satish Grover, Programme Coordinator Dr. Neha Jindal, Head Department of Chemistry Prof. Meetu S. Wadhwa, Prof. Aman Malhotra, Dr. Parveen Bala, Head Department of Physics Dr. Gurpreet Singh, Head Department of Zoology Dr. Amar Santosh, Head Department of Botany Dr. Kriti Gupta and Dr. Paramjeet Kaur.
The programme coordinator Dr. Neha Jindal briefed the gathering about layout of the 5 days residential camp INSPIRE Science camp. She stated that the success of the programme is evident from the fact that it has brought together more than 150 meritorious students from across the region. The camp would offer them a unique opportunity to explore the world of science through hands-on experiments, expert lectures, group activities and interactive sessions. The camp will feature a series of workshops, laboratory sessions, field visits, and discussions that will help students gain a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and their real-world applications.
Dr. Arvind (Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research, (IISER)) Mohali & Former Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala) dwelt deep into the basics of Science and Technology. In his engrossing discussion on the domains of science, literature and spirituality, he stated that while Science has long been the domain of rationality and objectivity, spirituality has been associated with faith, mysticism and subjective experience. He concluded his interactive session with students by stating that there is no end to Science and it will continue to transform the million lives and ages.
Dr. Pratap Kumar Pati, (Head, Department of Agriculture, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar & Former Head, Department of Biotechnology, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar) delivered a lecture on the topic “Biotechnology Catalyses Biodiversity to Boost Bieconomy”. He elaborated on biodiversity and biotechnology. He shared his team’s achievement in successful conservation of the endangered plant Rhodiola imbricata through tissue culture technique. He also elaborated upon the sustainable utilization of genetic resources in case of sweet potato, turmeric, tomato, capsicum, carrot, banana, cauliflower, rice, wheat, etc. He concluded his lecture by stating that for the benefit of society, it is important to explore more about genetic resources and enhance their commercial value using modern experimental tools.
Dr. Atul Khanna (Head, Department of Physics, Guru Nanak Dev University) discussed about “Accomplishments of Indian Space, Nuclear and Defense Programme”. He discussed in detail about the India’s Space Programs and five decades of Indian Rocketry. While explaining about the organization chart of Indian Space programme, he discussed with the young aspiring scientists about Solar system, Mangalyann’s journey from Earth to Mars, major findings of Chanderayaan -2 and Chanderayaan -3 , Gaganyaan Mission, India’s Nuclear Power Programmes, Dhruva Rector at BARC.etc. He made the students aware about the many opportunities and possibilities available in India.
After these thought provoking and insightful lectures, students were taken to the laboratories for hands-on-training sessions. A National award winning documentary titled “The Quantum Indians” was also screened for the students.
After the day’s eventful experiences, students recreated themselves by being a part of the cultural evening organized for them.
The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma expressed gratitude to the distinguished guests for truly honouring the DAV fraternity with their presence. He stated that the remarkable contribution of the eminent scholars, engaging and thought provoking lectures delivered by them and their inspiring journey have sure left an indelible mark on the young budding scientists, informing them about the various career options available to them. DAV Students of M.Sc. (Chemistry) Excel in University Examinations.(2 july 2024)

M.Sc. (Chemistry) students of DAV College, Bathinda attained exemplary results in the Punjabi University, Patiala Examination. Students of Semester (III) performed brilliantly and fetched glory for the college.
Harmanpreet Kaur from Semester III got SGPA 9.27, Simranjit Kaur scored 8.91 and Chirag Jain got 8.36 SGPA.
The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma congratulated the students and appreciated them for their consistent efforts. He stated that the combined efforts of the students, teachers and the administration lead the institution to glory. He appreciated the Head, Department of Chemistry Prof. Meetu S. Wadhwa and all the faculty members of the department for mentoring and educating the students for the outstanding performance.

B.Sc. students at DAV College bid farewell to their seniors.

Reminiscing about the days spent in college, first and second year B.Sc. students bid an emotional yet fun filled farewell to the final year students. All the students enthusiastically participated in an event full of fun, music and games. Students made the best of the opportunity to showcase their unique talents such as singing, dancing, poetry, comedy and mimicry. A personality pageant was organized for outgoing students, which included ramp walk followed by talent show and questionnaire round. Sarthak Bansal of B.Sc. Non-Medical and Anjali of B.Sc. Medical were crowned Mr. and Miss Farewell respectively. Whereas Ramendra Singh of B.Sc. Non-Medical and Mehakpreet Kaur of B.Sc. Medical were crowned Mr. Handsome and Miss Gorgeous.
The Principal of College, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, congratulated the winners of the pageant. Besides congratulating the students for organizing a wonderful event, he reminded them to be prepared for the upcoming exams and perform their best. He also motivated the outgoing students to do well in life and bring laurels to their parents and the institution. He appreciated the efforts of Prof. Harpreet Kaur Brar for her untiring efforts in organizing the mega event gracefully. DAV College Bathinda organises Educational Visit to PAU Regional Research Stations.

The Department of Chemistry organises Educational Visit to PAU Regional Research Stations of Bathinda and Jodhpur Romana, sponsored by DBT Star College Scheme. A group of 33 budding scientists under the supervision of Head, Department of Chemistry Prof. Meetu S. Wadhwa, Dr. Parveen Bala and Prof. Monika Rani visited the research stations where they were addressed by Dr. Karamjeet Singh Sekhon, Director, PAU Regional Research Station Bathinda and Dr. B.K. Yadav, Soil Scientist, PAU Regional Research Station Bathinda.
At their visit to Regional Research Station Bathinda in the Soil Analysis Lab the inquisitive students were demonstrated to analyze the soil for the various nutrients and experienced a practical session of the various types of instruments used for the soil analysis.
During their visit to Wing II of PAU Regional Research Station Jodhpur Romana, students were explained about the mechanism involved in desalination of the brackish water. Also they witnessed the growth of the plants in different concentrations of brackish water. The growth of the plants under controlled and manipulated weather and water condition was demonstrated and the students also witnessed the advanced methodology of tracing the direction of the wind for their promising growth. They were also informed about soilless culture based solely on the nutrient medium.
The Principal of the College Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma shared the words of praise for Dr. Meetu S. Wadhwa and all the other staff members involved in organising this educational visit.

Post Graduate Department of Chemistry, DAV College Bathinda Organises “Chem Exordia”  (8, Sept 2023).

In order to facilitate students explore the infinite world of possibilities and opportunities, the Post Graduate Department of Chemistry, DAV College Bathinda under the aegis of DBT Star College Scheme, Govt. of India, organised Chem Exordia, an ice breaking session, for the B.Sc and M.Sc. first year students on September 8, 2023.

Prof. Meetu Sukheja Wadhwa, Head Department of Chemistry familiarized the young entrants with the activities organized in the department and at the college level. The students gained an insight into the growth trajectory of the college and the department. The senior students too extended a warm welcome to their juniors. Mandeep Kaur (M.Sc. II) conducted the stage. Garima and Nikita (B.Sc. II) encouraged the B.Sc.I students to think positive and be confident. Mehakpreet and Anjali (B.Sc. III) involved them in various fun filled activities. Basking in the ambience of growth and learning, the students played various fun games like “Think-o-Mania”, “Speak-o-Mania” and “Visual-o-Mania”. They displayed their various set of skills in quiz, caption writing contest, answering riddles, draw and guess games and many more. Each fresher got a chance to introduce himself/herself and articulate his/her thoughts.

National Science Day Celebrated at DAV College Bathinda (4 March 2023)

National Science Day was celebrated at DAV College, Bathinda. The Departments of Science under the aegis of DBT Star College Scheme organized National Science Day-2023 on March 4, 2023 which was financially supported by Punjab State Council for Science & Technology, Chandigarh. The Chief Guest and the Resource Person on the occasion was Dr. Shaweta Sharma (IFSC, Panjab University, Chandigarh). The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar Dr. Satish Grover, Staff Secretary Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Coordinator NSD Dr. Ranjit Singh, Head, Department of Physics Dr. Gurpreet Singh, Head, Department of Chemistry Prof.Meetu S. Wadhwa, Prof. Aman Malhotra, Dr. Parveen Bala, Dr. Kulwinder Singh Mann, Head Department of Zoology Dr. Amar Santosh and Head Department of Botany Dr. Kriti Gupta welcomed the Chief Guest. The event witnessed an overwhelming participation of as many as 100 participants from various colleges.

The programme commenced with an introductory note by Dr. Gurpreet Singh, talking about the importance of National Science Day, commemorating the discovery of Raman Effect by nobel laureate, physicist C.V. Raman in 1928.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma thanked Dr. Shaweta Sharma for gracing the occasion with her presence. He stated that the college believes in building the capacities of the spirit of inquiry and creativity. This occasion of celebrating the National Science Day is therefore an attempt at igniting the young minds with the passion to discover and develop scientific temperament and mentoring them through innovative experimental techniques.

Science Students of DAV College, Bathinda Visit Regional Research Station (PAU), Bathinda

DAV College, Bathinda organized DBT Sponsored educational trip to the Regional Research Station, Bathinda. Prof. Meetu Sukheja Wadhwa and Dr. Parveen Bala accompanied group of 30 students of B.Sc. Students (Medical & Non-Medical).

Dr. Monika Mahajan briefed the students about the role of Polyphenols in the food and explained the need to utilize natural food rich in Polyphenols. Around 30 students benefited from this trip. Students learnt about various flavenoids and plants polyphenol which are currently extracted from natural products. In the food processing labs, Dr. Gurpreet Kaur briefed the students about processing procedures and explained how adulteration occurs in the daily used products. Detailed information about various techniques used for processing and utilization, like, Deep freezing , Incubator, Canning , Tray dryer, Centrifuge, HPLC ( High performance liquid chromatography ) Spectrophotometer ( Mass spectroscopy ) was provided. Students also visited food testing laboratory where they were informed about various instruments used for testing of food articles and their adulteration.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma stated that educational trips help students learn in an interactive and effective manner. He appreciated the students for taking keen interest in such instructive tours and adding to their knowledge vistas. He also appreciated the faculty members of the Chemistry Department for organizing the trip.

DAV College Bathinda organizes “Sci-Fiesta-2022”.

The Post Graduate Department of Chemistry, DAV College Bathinda under the aegis of DBT Star College Scheme organised “Sci-Fiesta-2022” on the occasion of World Science Day. The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar Dr. Satish Grover, Staff Secretary Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Head, Department of Chemistry Prof. Meetu S. Wadhwa, Prof. Aman Malhotra, Dr. Parveen Bala, Dr. Paramjeet Kaur and Dr. Neha Jindal extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest Dr. K.K. Nohria (Senior Member Local Committee), Guest of Honour Mrs. Bhupinder Kaur (Deputy District Officer (DEO) Bathinda), distinguished guests Mr. Jatin Sethi (Block Science Mentor, Goniana Block), Mr. Jagdeep Singh (Block Science Mentor, Talwandi Sabo Block), Mr. Sarabjeet Singh (Block Science Mentor, Bhagta Block) and Mr. Manish Gupta (Block Science Mentor, Sangat Block). The judges on the occasion were Dr. Kirandeep Kaur (Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, MRSPTU), Dr. Satnam Singh (Department of Physics, MRSPTU) and Dr. Vandana Jindal (HoD Computer Science, DAV College, Bathinda). The event witnessed an overwhelming participation of as many as 350 students from 25 different schools and colleges.

The students unleashed their creativity in poster making and displayed ingenuity in demonstrating the working models. The young scientists unraveled the mystical and magical world of science in the show “The Magical World of Science”, wherein the students demonstrated that science is everywhere around us in our daily lives. They performed interesting experiments and established that teaching and learning beyond books makes education holistic and creates students’ interest in basic sciences.

Many interesting concepts of science and technology were brought forth in the beautiful rangoli designs. Each design had an interesting science story to narrate.

The Magical World of Science witnessed the teams of M.H.R. Sen. Sec. School Bathinda, Saint Kabir School Paras Ram Nagar Bathinda and DAV College Bathinda conducting Scientific Experiments with objects found in our daily lives.
