Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1969, offering B.Sc (Medical/Non-Medical), 10+1 and 10+2 (Medical/Non Medical). The department feels proud in producing Doctors and Engineers of National & International repute from Bathinda and adjoining areas. The department has achieved new milestone by starting post-graduation course in Chemistry from the year 2017.

DEPARTMENTAL LABORATORIES: The department is flourished with two undergraduate and two post graduate laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

INSTRUMENTAL FACILITIES: The department has excellent instrumental facilities such as FT-IR, UV-Visible spectrophotometer, Rotary Evaporator, pH meter , Conductivity meter Muffle Furnace, UV Chamber Cabinet, Colorimeter, Potentiometer, Polarimeter with sodium lamp, Abbe’s Refractometer, Centrifugal Machine, Water Double Distillation Unit with cut off , Sonicator, Electronic Balance etc.

DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY: Apart from central library of the college, department has its own library with an excellent collection of invaluable books by Indian and foreign authors. The books are issued regularly to the students as per their requirement. The library has a unique book bank from which the books are issued to the needy and academically deserving students.

ACME CHEMICAL SOCIETY:  ACS steered by the department is constituted for the all round development of the students. The objective of the society is to nurture managerial skills in students which will extend their outlook and capacity beyond the traditions of academia.

VISION: To awaken the young minds and ignite the passion and interest in the subject. To discover and develop scientific temperament in the students by dedicated teaching and innovative experimental techniques.

DAV College Bathinda organises Educational Visit to PAU Regional Research Stations.

The Department of Chemistry organises Educational Visit to PAU Regional Research Stations of Bathinda and Jodhpur Romana, sponsored by DBT Star College Scheme. A group of 33 budding scientists under the supervision of Head, Department of Chemistry Prof. Meetu S. Wadhwa, Dr. Parveen Bala and Prof. Monika Rani visited the research stations where they were addressed by Dr. Karamjeet Singh Sekhon, Director, PAU Regional Research Station Bathinda and Dr. B.K. Yadav, Soil Scientist, PAU Regional Research Station Bathinda.
At their visit to Regional Research Station Bathinda in the Soil Analysis Lab the inquisitive students were demonstrated to analyze the soil for the various nutrients and experienced a practical session of the various types of instruments used for the soil analysis.
During their visit to Wing II of PAU Regional Research Station Jodhpur Romana, students were explained about the mechanism involved in desalination of the brackish water. Also they witnessed the growth of the plants in different concentrations of brackish water. The growth of the plants under controlled and manipulated weather and water condition was demonstrated and the students also witnessed the advanced methodology of tracing the direction of the wind for their promising growth. They were also informed about soilless culture based solely on the nutrient medium.
The Principal of the College Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma shared the words of praise for Dr. Meetu S. Wadhwa and all the other staff members involved in organising this educational visit.

Post Graduate Department of Chemistry, DAV College Bathinda Organises “Chem Exordia”  (8, Sept 2023).

In order to facilitate students explore the infinite world of possibilities and opportunities, the Post Graduate Department of Chemistry, DAV College Bathinda under the aegis of DBT Star College Scheme, Govt. of India, organised Chem Exordia, an ice breaking session, for the B.Sc and M.Sc. first year students on September 8, 2023.

Prof. Meetu Sukheja Wadhwa, Head Department of Chemistry familiarized the young entrants with the activities organized in the department and at the college level. The students gained an insight into the growth trajectory of the college and the department. The senior students too extended a warm welcome to their juniors. Mandeep Kaur (M.Sc. II) conducted the stage. Garima and Nikita (B.Sc. II) encouraged the B.Sc.I students to think positive and be confident. Mehakpreet and Anjali (B.Sc. III) involved them in various fun filled activities. Basking in the ambience of growth and learning, the students played various fun games like “Think-o-Mania”, “Speak-o-Mania” and “Visual-o-Mania”. They displayed their various set of skills in quiz, caption writing contest, answering riddles, draw and guess games and many more. Each fresher got a chance to introduce himself/herself and articulate his/her thoughts.

The Vote of Thanks was extended by Prof. Aman Malhotra.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma extended his best wishes to the new students and inspired them to make the best out of their
journey in the vibrant campus of DAV College Bathinda. During his welcome address, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma said, “DAV offers the best quality infrastructure and the best in academics and co-curricular activities. Each one of you should excel in academics and tap your inherent skills. As you grow and excel, the institution will grow along with you.” He appreciated the efforts of the faculty of the department , namely, HoD Prof. Meetu S. Wadhwa, Prof. Aman Malhotra, Dr. Parveen Bala, Dr. Paramjeet Kaur, Dr. Neha Jindal, Prof. Amrinder Singh, Prof. Pawan Kumar, Prof. Anshu, Prof. Eshu and Prof. Monika.

National Science Day Celebrated at DAV College Bathinda (4 March 2023)

National Science Day was celebrated at DAV College, Bathinda. The Departments of Science under the aegis of DBT Star College Scheme organized National Science Day-2023 on March 4, 2023 which was financially supported by Punjab State Council for Science & Technology, Chandigarh. The Chief Guest and the Resource Person on the occasion was Dr. Shaweta Sharma (IFSC, Panjab University, Chandigarh). The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar Dr. Satish Grover, Staff Secretary Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Coordinator NSD Dr. Ranjit Singh, Head, Department of Physics Dr. Gurpreet Singh, Head, Department of Chemistry Prof.Meetu S. Wadhwa, Prof. Aman Malhotra, Dr. Parveen Bala, Dr. Kulwinder Singh Mann, Head Department of Zoology Dr. Amar Santosh and Head Department of Botany Dr. Kriti Gupta welcomed the Chief Guest. The event witnessed an overwhelming participation of as many as 100 participants from various colleges.

The programme commenced with an introductory note by Dr. Gurpreet Singh, talking about the importance of National Science Day, commemorating the discovery of Raman Effect by nobel laureate, physicist C.V. Raman in 1928.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma thanked Dr. Shaweta Sharma for gracing the occasion with her presence. He stated that the college believes in building the capacities of the spirit of inquiry and creativity. This occasion of celebrating the National Science Day is therefore an attempt at igniting the young minds with the passion to discover and develop scientific temperament and mentoring them through innovative experimental techniques.

Science Students of DAV College, Bathinda Visit Regional Research Station (PAU), Bathinda

DAV College, Bathinda organized DBT Sponsored educational trip to the Regional Research Station, Bathinda. Prof. Meetu Sukheja Wadhwa and Dr. Parveen Bala accompanied group of 30 students of B.Sc. Students (Medical & Non-Medical).

Dr. Monika Mahajan briefed the students about the role of Polyphenols in the food and explained the need to utilize natural food rich in Polyphenols. Around 30 students benefited from this trip. Students learnt about various flavenoids and plants polyphenol which are currently extracted from natural products. In the food processing labs, Dr. Gurpreet Kaur briefed the students about processing procedures and explained how adulteration occurs in the daily used products. Detailed information about various techniques used for processing and utilization, like, Deep freezing , Incubator, Canning , Tray dryer, Centrifuge, HPLC ( High performance liquid chromatography ) Spectrophotometer ( Mass spectroscopy ) was provided. Students also visited food testing laboratory where they were informed about various instruments used for testing of food articles and their adulteration.

Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma stated that educational trips help students learn in an interactive and effective manner. He appreciated the students for taking keen interest in such instructive tours and adding to their knowledge vistas. He also appreciated the faculty members of the Chemistry Department for organizing the trip.

DAV College Bathinda organizes “Sci-Fiesta-2022”.

The Post Graduate Department of Chemistry, DAV College Bathinda under the aegis of DBT Star College Scheme organised “Sci-Fiesta-2022” on the occasion of World Science Day. The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg, Registrar Dr. Satish Grover, Staff Secretary Prof. Kuldeep Singh, Head, Department of Chemistry Prof. Meetu S. Wadhwa, Prof. Aman Malhotra, Dr. Parveen Bala, Dr. Paramjeet Kaur and Dr. Neha Jindal extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest Dr. K.K. Nohria (Senior Member Local Committee), Guest of Honour Mrs. Bhupinder Kaur (Deputy District Officer (DEO) Bathinda), distinguished guests Mr. Jatin Sethi (Block Science Mentor, Goniana Block), Mr. Jagdeep Singh (Block Science Mentor, Talwandi Sabo Block), Mr. Sarabjeet Singh (Block Science Mentor, Bhagta Block) and Mr. Manish Gupta (Block Science Mentor, Sangat Block). The judges on the occasion were Dr. Kirandeep Kaur (Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, MRSPTU), Dr. Satnam Singh (Department of Physics, MRSPTU) and Dr. Vandana Jindal (HoD Computer Science, DAV College, Bathinda). The event witnessed an overwhelming participation of as many as 350 students from 25 different schools and colleges.

The students unleashed their creativity in poster making and displayed ingenuity in demonstrating the working models. The young scientists unraveled the mystical and magical world of science in the show “The Magical World of Science”, wherein the students demonstrated that science is everywhere around us in our daily lives. They performed interesting experiments and established that teaching and learning beyond books makes education holistic and creates students’ interest in basic sciences.

Many interesting concepts of science and technology were brought forth in the beautiful rangoli designs. Each design had an interesting science story to narrate.

The Magical World of Science witnessed the teams of M.H.R. Sen. Sec. School Bathinda, Saint Kabir School Paras Ram Nagar Bathinda and DAV College Bathinda conducting Scientific Experiments with objects found in our daily lives.
