National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a government-sponsored public service programme conducted by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. NSS is a voluntary association of young people in colleges, universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community linkage. NSS scheme was launched in Gandhi’s centenary year, 1969.
NSS aims at honing a student’s personality through community service and develop interpersonal relationships and skills. Watching the society at close quarters, orients the students towards the realities of life, which brings about a change in their social perception.
NSS symbol
NSS symbol represents the “Rath Wheel” of the Konark Sun Temple of Orissa. The huge wheel portrays the cycles of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of Sun Chariot Wheel primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It also stands for dynamism and progressive outlook of youth.

NSS Objectives

The college aims at instituting a fruitful association between campus and community, rural and urban and knowledge and action. For this purpose, the college organizes regular NSS activities, contributing towards the welfare of the society.

DAV College Bathinda Observes Vigilance Awareness Week 3rd Nov. 2022
The NCC and NSS units of DAV College Bathinda in collaboration with National Disaster Response Force, Bathinda Unit (NDRF) organized an extension lecture on “Preventive Vigilance Measure” to observe National Vigilance Awareness Week.
Yoga Camp at DAV College Bathinda
The NSS and NCC units of DAV College Bathinda, have organized a one-week Yoga Camp in the college premises, from October 27 – November 2, 2022 (5:30 am to 6:30 am).
Lecture on Mental Health Delivered by Dr. Rati at DAV College Bathinda on 3rd Oct. 2022
The NSS Unit in association with Student Welfare Department and the Department of Computer Science of DAV College Bathinda delivered a lecture on “Mental Health” by Dr. Rati (Academician & Physiotherapist, Certified Personality Development Trainer, Bathinda).

Tree Plantation Drive at DAV College Bathinda on 15th Aug. 2022
Taking steps to conserve the environment, a Tree Plantation Drive was organized by DAV College Bathinda. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Principal H.R. Gandhar (Vice President, DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi). Dr. K.K. Nohria (Senior Member, Local Committee) was also present on the occasion. A floral welcome was extended to the distinguished guests by the Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, teaching and non–teaching staff.
Many saplings of varied species were planted by the guests, faculty and staff during the drive with great enthusiasm. The Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma stated that such drives are organized to sensitize the youth towards taking all suitable measures for combating the environmental issues and conserving nature. This, he stated, can be achieved by planting saplings and making them consider it their prime duty to nurture these plants throughout their life. He expressed gratitude to the NSS Programme Officers Dr. Surinder Kumar Singla, Prof. Amit Kumar Singla, Dr. Prabhjot Kaur and the student volunteers for their constant efforts towards making the campus green and eco friendly.
75th Anniversary of India’s Independence Celebrated at DAV College Bathinda on 15th Aug. 2022
The 75th anniversary of India’s Independence was celebrated with great reverence and enthusiasm at DAV College Bathinda. The programme commenced with the flag hoisting by the esteemed Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma which was followed by a ceremonious march past by the NCC cadets.
In his overwhelming speech, the Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma exhorted one and all to ponder upon the key words of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava”, which reminds us all of our duties towards the nation, when demanding for our rights. He expressed gratitude to the departments of NCC, NSS, Youth Welfare and Physical Education for organizing this event efficiently.
DAV College Bathinda Observes Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign
DAV College Bathinda on the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav observed ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign to mark the 75th year of India’s independence. This auspicious occasion was graced by the presence of Sh. H.R. Gandhar (Vice President, DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi) and Dr. K.K. Nohria, Senior Member, Local Committee. The distinguished guests were accorded a warm welcome by the Principal Dr. Rajeev Kumar Sharma, members of the faculty, administration, general office and the students.
All the members present on the occasion clicked a selfie with the National Flag and also assembled for the group photograph. The occasion invoked a sense of patriotism and pride in every soul and pervaded the atmosphere with jubilation and belongingness.

Under the Green Mission of Punjab Government, NSS Unit organized a Plant Awareness Drive on 2nd March 2021. Under the drive, Dr. Kriti Gupta (Head, Botany Department) made aware the students about various plants and their importance. (Students Participated – 35)
Under Polio Eradication Campaign of Government of India, NSS Unit organized Polio Awareness Rally on 16th January 2021 (Students Participated – 80)
NSS Unit celebrated World AIDS Day by organizing an Onilne lecture on AIDS Awareness on 1st December 2020 by Dr. Manparvesh Singh (Care Hospital, Bathinda). (Students Participated – 100)
To celebrate 400th Anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, NSS Unit organized a Poem Writing Competition on 4th October 2020. Lakshita, Navjot and Anamika won 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. (Students Participated – 50)

- In a bid to extend support to the National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH) observing the Communal Harmony Campaign and Fund Raising Week (from Nov. 19 to Nov. 25), the NSS unit of DAV College Bathinda observed Flag Day on Nov. 25 in its campus with great enthusiasm and fervor. On the occasion of flag day, the students were exhorted to cultivate the ethos of Communal Harmony and National Integration. The NSS volunteers collected Rs. 6,750/- to extend financial support for destitute children affected by communal, caste, ethnic or terrorist violence.
The Principal Dr. Sanjeev Sharma for promotion of this noble cause, said that a little support extended by the faculty, staff and students may bring a smile to the faces of the destitute. He appreciated the earnest efforts of NSS coordinators, Prof. Satish Grover, Prof. Anuja Puri and Prof. Kuldeep Singh.
The Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar Garg praised the NSS volunteers and the coordinators for collecting the sum and lending a helping hand to the needy.
- The NSS Deptt. of DAV College Bathinda organised an Awareness campaign on “Excessive Use of Antibiotics” on Nov. 20, 2019.The students and the staff were informed about the awareness app launched by World Health Organisation to minimise the use of excessive use of antibiotics. They were informed that a common man can use this app by putting in information regarding his health, diseases, symptoms and seek advice.A Poster making competition was also held on the occasion. 18 students participated in this competition. Lisa (BSc(M) -III) bagged1st position, Anamika (BA-I) stood second and Chanchal (BA-I) got third position. The Principal Dr. Sanjeev Sharma praised the NSS Programme Officers for organising this awareness programme.
- The NSS unit of DAV College Bathinda organised a “NukkadNatak” in the college premises on Oct. 22, 2019 to make everyone aware of celebrating Green Diwali. The volunteers of NSS performed very well and in an exceptionally beautiful manner exhorted all to celebrate Green Diwali. Citing examples from the era of Lord Rama, they portrayed that how by lighting diyas and preparing sweets one can enjoy a sparkling and a sweet Diwali. They drew a strong message across the audience that the sanctity of this festival should be maintained by abstaining from lighting crackers and causing pollution.
The staff and the students watched the “NukkadNatak” with rapt attention and pledged that they will celebrate a Green Diwali and protect the environment.The Principal Dr. Sanjeev Sharma appreciated the efforts of NSS Programme Officers Prof. Satish Grover, Prof.AnujaPuri and Prof.Kuldeep Singh. He stated that if we want to gift a cleaner and a healthier environment to our successive generations, we should take effective steps like celebrating Green Diwali, thus making our world pollution free and a better place to live in.
- NSS unit of DAV college Bathinda organized a spiritual lecture on Oct.11,2019 by Dr. Avninder Singh, Director General, Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Bathinda on “Aao Jiviye Guru Nanak De Bachna Naal”, to commemorate the 550th Birth Anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Dr. Avninder Singh during his lecture elaborated on the 3H Education Model of Guru Nanak Dev Ji i.e Hand, Heart and Head. He expounded on the significance of how by working and preserving, we should earn an honest livelihood and by sharing with others and being sympathetic towards others we will tread ahead on the path shown by God. He advised the young crowd to imbibe the teachings of tolerance, as religion does not divide but unite and spread the message of one God who dwells in every one of His creations and constitutes the eternal truth. About 110 NSS Volunteers and 12 faculty members were present on this occasion.

- NSS unit in order to spread awareness about the ills of stubble burning amongst the formers conducted the rally on Oct. 04, 2019 under Environment Consciousness Drive In accordance with the orders of NSS department Punjabi university Patiala. NSS coordinators organized this drive. 50 NSS volunteers participated in the Campaign. The Principal Dr. Sanjeev Sharma appreciated the NSS unit for initiative this drive and tirelessly working towards the cause.

- NSS unit participated in ‘SHANTI MARCH’ on Oct. 02, 2019 being organized by District Administration, Bathinda to commemorate 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi ji. This SHANTI MARCH started from Improvement Trust Office and finished at Rose Garden. - NSS unit of the college organized an awareness lecture on Sept. 30, 2019 on “Anaemia Prevention and Balanced Diet” by Dr. Manparvesh Singh Chahal, Consultant Dietician, Care Hospital, Bathinda. Dr. Chahal discussed in detail about the eating patterns and the health of growing girls. He called nature as the best medicine and reiterated use of coconut oil, turmeric, cinnamon, curry leaves and other such natural products to improve our memory and increase our immunity. 16 faculty members along with 75 NSS volunteers participated in the lecture. The Principal Dr. Sanjeev Sharma appreciated the NSS unit for organizing such lectures which aim of improving the health of the students and the staff.

- To mark the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of NSS, the NSS unit of DAV College Bathinda organized a “Swachhta hi Sewa” Camp in the college premises on Sep. 22, 2019.52 NSS volunteers wholeheartedly participated in the camp and cleaned every nook and corner of the college. The Principal Dr. Sanjeev Sharma, Vice Principal Prof. Parveen Kumar, NSS Programme Officers Prof. Satish Grover, Prof. Anuja Puri, Prof. Kuldeep Singh and NSS Volunteers welcomed the distinguished guests Prof. Ashok Gupta(Retd. Assistant Prof. ,DAV College, Bathinda) and Dr. Rupali(MBBS, MD Community Medicine, Adesh University). Prof Ashok Gupta in his lecture asked the students to identify the needs and problems of the community and develop themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility. Dr. Rupali stated about the various diseases like dengue, malaria,typhoid etc which emanate from unhygienic conditions and dirty surroundings. These diseases may turn fatal if proper preventive measures are not taken. She thus advised everyone to take it as moral responsibility to keep the surroundings clean. Dr. Sanjeev Sharma appreciated NSS officers and volunteers for their dedicated and untiring efforts. He stated that NSS teaches the Youth to bear their social responsibility and orients them toward social welfare.

- To commemorate 38th death anniversary of the Freedom Fighter Lala Jagat Narain on September 09, 2019, the department of NSS in association with Punjab Kesari Group, Bathinda organized Blood Donation Camp. In order to encourage the students and the blood donors, the distinguish guest present on the occasion were Dr. Nanak Singh(SSP, Bathinda City), Sh. Arunjit Gill(Chairman, Congress Bathinda), Sh. Balwinder Sharma (Bureau of Jagwani), Sh. Vijay Verma(Bureau of Punjab Kesari), Dr. Rajinder(BTO, Bathinda) and DAV Local Committee Chairman Dr. K.K. Nohria. The Students and the staff of the college donated 45 units of blood voluntarily. Refreshment was also provided to the blood donors. On this occasion, the Principal Dr. Sanjeev Sharma appreciated the blood donors and praised the efforts of NSS Programme Officers for this noble cause. Dr. Sharma stated that the gift of blood is the gift of life, and one should voluntarily come forward and donate blood which provides immense satisfaction.

- NSS department of DAV College of Bathinda organised the live telecast of, a nation wide initiative launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Sh. Narender Modi on 29 August 2019. 54 students enthusiastically and intently listen to the speech by the PM. A Fitness pledge was also administered to the staff and the students, wherein they pledged to maintain the healthy lifestyle and participate in sports. - 5th International Yoga Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm under the banner of NSS deptt. on 21st June,2019. Yog Guru Radhey Sham Bansal, President Yog Sewa Samiti and Prof. N.K.Gosain- Chairmain Yog Sewa Samiti, Bathinda graced the occasion. Yog Guru guided the participants revealing benefits of different ‘Yogasans’ for different health problems. The Principal Dr. Sanjeev Sharma made an appeal to the participants to make Yoga a part of their daily life for physical and mental health. 57 NSS Volunteers and 16 faculty members (teaching and non-teaching) joined the occasion and availed the benefits of Yoga.

- One Day NSS Camp was organized on March 24, 2019 at DAV College, Bathinda reiterating the belief that a clean environment and surroundings are necessary for leading a healthy life. 52 NSS volunteers participated wholeheartedly in the Swachhta Abhiyaan and cleaned the library reading hall, seminar hall and girl’s common room. Refreshment was also served to the volunteers. The NSS coordination Prof. Satish Grover, Prof. Anuja Puri and Prof. Sheeshpal Jindal organized the camp with meticulous planning.

- The NSS unit observed Youth Empowerment Day in the campus on March 23, 2019. On this occasion various competitions like poster making, singing patriotic songs and poem recitation were organized. 23 students participated wholeheartedly in the poster making competition and 15 students presented patriotic songs and poems. The first, second and third positions were won by Kajal Kumari, Shabnam and Kahkasha and Veenakshi resp. in the poster making.

- The NSS unit and Red Ribbon Club participated in a one day district level workshop organized by Assistant Office Director, Youth Services, Bathinda at RPC Degree College, Behman Diwana on March 06, 2019. Six volunteers of NSS participated in this workshop. Three of them donated blood and three participated in the poster making competition. Karandeep Singh (B.Sc.-III NM) bagged first position and Kajal Kumari (B.Com-III) stood third.

- The NSS unit organised an extension lecture on “Cancer Awareness and Self Examination : Key to Success” by Dr. M.K. Mahajan and Dr. Richika Gupta,Pathogist, from Advanced Cancer Institute, Bathinda. Dr. Richika’s lecture offered pertinent information on cancer risks, prevention and early detection.Dr. M.K. Mahajan spoke on self examination and report to the doctor if someone notice any irregularities. Near about 80 students and approximate 15 faculty members attended the lecture held on Feb. 26, 2019.

- To commemorate 550th Birthday of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the department of NSS and Red Ribbon Club in association with HDFC Bank organized Blood Donation Camp on Nov. 21, 2018. The students and the staff of the college donated 40 units of blood voluntarily.
- Working towards the welfare of the community, the NSS Department in association with Noujawan Welfare Society distributed clothes, blankets and other things of requirement in the Kheta Basti on Nov. 15, 2018.
- The NSS and Red Ribbon Club conducted a rally under Environment Consciousness Drive in order to spread awareness about the ills of the stubble burning amongst the farmers on Oct. 29, 2018. 30 NSS volunteers participated in the campaign.

NSS Activities: 2016-17
1. The NSS unit in association with HDFC Bank Ltd. organized a Blood Donation Camp on 22.11.16. 51 units of blood was donated voluntarily by the students and the staff of the college. On another occasion, on 01.09.2016 NSS volunteers donated blood to patients in emergency situation.

2. The NSS, Dean Student Welfare and NCC units in association with National Disaster Response Force organized a lecture on Vigilance Awareness by Mr. Radheyshyam, ASI, NDRF, accompanied by inspector Gurmel Singh.
3. A one day Cleanliness Camp was organised on 25.9.16. 30 N.S.S. volunteers rendered their services and cleaned the college campus.
4. The students on the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Week recited patriotic soul stirring poems highlighting the contributions of the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. The administration, staff and the students administered a pledge to withstand the onslaughts on the unity, security and integrity of the nation.

7. Extension Lecture to celebrate National Vigilance Week was delivered on 04-11-2016.
8. Voter Awareness Seminar was held on 08-10-2016, Chief Guest for the seminar was ADC Ms. Sheena Aggarwal.
9. Voter Awareness Rally has taken place on 02-10-2016.
10. Declamation & Poem Recitation Competition was organized on 27-08-2016 and Chief Guest for this event was Dr. Nanak Singh, IPS, SP Bathinda.

1. NSS organized a special lecture on the life of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. Prof. Sandeep Bhatia, NSS Programme officer delivered a lecture on the inspirational life of the Loh Purush.
2. NSS organized a special lecture on the life of Swami Vivekanand. Dr. R.K. Mahajan, President, Swami Vivekanand Study Circle, delivered the lecture. 12-01-2016
3. Woolen wear was distributed to the underprivileged students on 6-1.-2016.
4. An essay writing competition was organized in the campus on Lala Lajpat Rai’s 150th birth anniversary.
5. Documentary film “Awareness on Aids”, a Government of India initiative was screened for the students of the college on 01-12-2015.
